When the ordinal number is an adjective
It precedes the noun, which is always singular and agrees with it in gender.
The second book
el segundo libro
The second church
La segunda iglesia
When this noun is omitted and the adjective becomes a pronoun,
the meaning of the noun is understood, its gender is shown in the “o” or “a” and the (definite) article is retained.
El segundo libro becomes
el segundo.
You have the first and the third book and I have the second.
Tienes el primer libro y el tercer libro y yo tengo el segundo.
As adjectives the ordinal numbers “primero” and “tercero”
drop the “o” and “a” when preceding a singular masculine noun.
The tree is the seventh.
El arbol es el séptimo.
The lamp is the second.
La lámpara es la segunda.
The Shoe is the ninth.
El zapato es el noveno.
The glass is the fifth.
El vaso es el quinto.
The bag is the tenth.
La bolsa es la décima.
The cat is the first.
El gato es el primer
The tie is the eight
La corbata es la octava.
The computer is the third.
