Order Protura contains the Telsontails, extremely small, slender, wingless insects.
describe the average telsontail’s appearance
They are soft and colourless, also lacking antennae and eyes. They have piercing-sucking mouthparts. The front pair of legs is extended as organs of touch, while the 2nd and 3rd pairs and used for walking. The first 2-3 abdominal segments have rudimentary legs (styli and subcoxal sacs)
What is unique about Telsontail’s
Newely hatched telsontails have 8 abdominal segments, and twelve when fully developed, increasing by one after each molt. The twelfth segment is unique to this order, is called the Telson, which is the origin of their name.
How do telsontails defend themselves
To defend themselves from enemies, telsontails curve their abdomen over their hand and shoot a sticky excretion out of a gland.
What are the two families of telsontails
Two families containing 50 species are know: called Eosentomidae and Acerentomidae are found worldwide.
what do we know about the way of life for telsontails
The way of life for proturan is mysterious though it seams they feed on Springtails (order Collembola) by impaling them with their sickle shaped claws and sucking out their internal juices.
