orbital cellulitis definition
A
infection in the orbital soft tissues with ocular dysfunction, usually due to underlying bacterial sinusitis

orbital cellulitis presentation
A
- frontal headaches
- fevers
- diplopia or vision loss
- lid swelling
- proptosis, chemosis
- limitation of ocular movements

orbital cellulitis causes
A
- usually secondary to ethmoidal sinusitis
- inflammation causes raised IOP
- results in optic nerve compression

orbital cellulitis diagnosis
A
- contrast CT is diagnostic
- MRI if suspected abscess
- red, swollen, tender
- recent infections
- swab may be positive

orbital cellulitis management
A
- admit for IV antibiotics (empirical and then targeted)
- take FBC and blood cultures
- ENT opinion as sinus drainage may be needed
