a chronic disease of the retina linked to blood vessel damage and neurodegeneration

A
- longstanding diabetes
- poor glucose control
- may be asymptomatic
- floaters in vision
- gradual or acute vision loss

diagnostic features of diabetic retinopathy
A
- microaneurysms
- cotton wool spots
- intraretinal haemorrhages
- venous bleeding
- neovascularisation

management of diabetic retinopathy
A
- optimise diabetes and BP control
- can be treated with pan-retinal photocoagulation
- proliferative requires an urgent referral
