What is recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS)
A recurrent ulceration that may present at any age and cane be predisposed in a family

List the 3 types of Recurrent aphthous stomatitis
- Minor
- Major
- Herpetifroem
Describe minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis
- Recurrent episodes of 1-5 ulcers
- Rounded/ oval painful lesions
- Lesions heal within 2 weeks
How is idiopathic minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis diagnosed
By following elimination of iron, serum vitamin B12, red blood cells and folate deficiencies
What is there treatment for minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis
- Chlorhexidine
- Difflam spray
- Lignocaine gel
- 2mm soft bite guard if stomatitis associated with parafunctional habits
Describe major recurrent aphthous stomatitis
Recurrent episodes of ulcers greater than 10mm that can persist for more than 4 weeks
How can we manage major recurrent aphthous stomatitis
- Chlorhexidine
- Difflam spray
- Lignocaine gel
- 2mm soft bite guard if stomatitis associated with parafunctional habits
Describe herpetiform recurrent aphthous stomatitis
- Very uncommon
- Ulcers are small 2-3mm in diameter
- Many livers can be present at the same time up to 100
- Ulcers can coalesce to form larger ones
