What is lichen plans
An autoimmune mediated inflammatory mucosal disease that presents as red white or ulcerated oral mucosal lesions
What drugs can lichenoid like reactions be bought on by
- NSAIDs
- Carbamazepine
- Beta blockers
- Ace inhibitors
What must we do to confirm a diagnosis of lichen planes
Biopsy to rule out squamous cell carcinoma
How can we manage lichen planes
- Toothpastes can be irritant and so less stringent pastes are indicated e.g pronamel
- Topical and systemic agents
- Chlorhexidine mouthwash
- Alcohol and tobacco advice
Give examples of topical and systemic agents we can use to manage lichen planus
- Difflam oral spray for analgesics
- Orabase or gelclair coating agent to soothe mucosa
- Corticosteroids; Betnesol 500mg dissolved in water and mouthwash
- Flixonase spray
What is pemphigoid
An immune mediated blistering disease that has multiple subtypes

Mucous membrane pemphigoid
What can mucous membrane pemphigoid present as
- Desquamative gingivitis
- Blisters that are tense and filed with blood that can burst to form irregular erosions
- Chronic conjunctivas
Is there a cure for pemphigoid
no we just manage symptoms and try to prevent organ damage
