post op instructions

A
  1. numb for 3-4hrs
  2. avoid biting tongue, lips etc in this time and hot foods as could burn
  3. no smoking or alcohol for 24hrs minimum
  4. dont rince mouth for next 24hrs as can cause bleed or dry socket, teaspoon salt in warm water after 24hrs (after eating at least but more if can)
  5. pain expected, beteer around 7-10 days - take normal painkillers as you would
  6. sudden increase in pain few days later = sign of infeciton and contact dentist
  7. swelling common after jaw surgery, worst 2-3 days after
  8. bruising common (2 weeks to resolve)
  9. bleeding minimal after leave, expect blood stained saliva for 24-48 hrs, if bleeding bite on cotton handkerchief for 30 mins, if still then do again, if still contact department or 111 out of hours
  10. mouth opening restricted for about a week, eat semi solid foods where possible, eat normally at own confort level
  11. stiches = self resorbing unless told otherwise, dissolve and drop out over 7-10 days
