post op instructions
A
- numb for 3-4hrs
- avoid biting tongue, lips etc in this time and hot foods as could burn
- no smoking or alcohol for 24hrs minimum
- dont rince mouth for next 24hrs as can cause bleed or dry socket, teaspoon salt in warm water after 24hrs (after eating at least but more if can)
- pain expected, beteer around 7-10 days - take normal painkillers as you would
- sudden increase in pain few days later = sign of infeciton and contact dentist
- swelling common after jaw surgery, worst 2-3 days after
- bruising common (2 weeks to resolve)
- bleeding minimal after leave, expect blood stained saliva for 24-48 hrs, if bleeding bite on cotton handkerchief for 30 mins, if still then do again, if still contact department or 111 out of hours
- mouth opening restricted for about a week, eat semi solid foods where possible, eat normally at own confort level
- stiches = self resorbing unless told otherwise, dissolve and drop out over 7-10 days
