What factors make someone more susceptible to an OAC?
Upper molar extraction
Long roots
Apices close to sinus
>40 years old
Large sinuses
Infection in associated tooth pre extraction
History of chronic sinus problems can enlarge the sinus
How is a root dislodged in the sinus managed?
Refer if appropriate
Open fenestration with care, attempt to remove root from sinus through the socket using suction/ ribbon gauze.
Wash out sinus once root has been retrieved and close with buccal advancement flap
How does OAF present?
Usually 6+ weeks following extraction
Symptoms may include:
Problems with fluid consumption/ speech/ smoking/ using straw
Bad taste in mouth/ pus
Sinusitis symptoms
Non-helaing socket
What is the difference between OAC and OAF
OAF is epithelial lined
