Oral soft tissue anatomy JVD foundations 2007 Flashcards

Q

JVD 2007 Oral soft tissue anatomy by Eubanks, what is oral vestibule vs oral cavity proper?

A

The oral cavity can be divided into the oral vestibule or the space “outside” of the teeth (laterally cheeks and lips then at the bottom becomes mucolabial or mucobuccal fold; lined by stratified squamous epithelium = oral mucosa, where unattached becomes attached = mucogingival junction), and the oral cavity proper, or the space “inside” of the teeth (The oral cavity proper is bound dorsally by the hard palate, ventrally by the mucosa reflected from the tongue, laterally and rostrally by the teeth and gums, and caudally by the palatoglossal arches.)

Q

JVD 2007 Oral soft tissue anatomy by Eubanks, what are the different frenula that are part of the oral vestibule?

A

1) A single Maxillary frenulum that attaches lip to maxillary incisors
2) Bilateral mandibular frenula that connect lip to gingiva lateral to mandibular canines

Q

JVD 2007 Oral soft tissue anatomy by Eubanks, what are the salivary gland openings in the oral vestibule?

A

1) Parotid-dorsocaudal ; parotid gland is ventral to ear and caudal to TMJ; The parotid salivary duct crosses the lateral surface of the masseter muscle, courses beneath the buccal mucosa, and opens as a single orifice onto a papilla located at the rostral end of a blunt ridge of mucosa above the distal root of the maxillary fourth premolar tooth
2) Zygomatic-caudal to parotid papilla where the main duct opens, with 1-4 accessory ducts that may be present along that ridge
3)Other: Numerous lingual, labial, buccal, and palatine salivary glands and their associated excretory ducts are scattered throughout the submucosa of the tongue, lips, buccal cavity, and hard palate, respectively. These glands contribute only a small amount of serous or mucous fluid to oral secretions.

Q

JVD 2007 Oral soft tissue anatomy by Eubanks, describe the palatine foramina.

A

The major palatine foramen is located medial to the maxillary fourth premolar tooth (Fig. 4). Caudal to this foramen, one or more minor palatine foramina can be identified. The palatine fissure is an elongate oval opening located between the maxillary canine tooth and midline

Q

JVD 2007 Oral soft tissue anatomy by Eubanks, describe salivary gland ducts/openings on the mandibular aspect of oral cavity.

A

The mandibular and compact (monostomatic) major sublingual ducts open on the sublingual caruncle.
The polystomatic portion of the sublingual salivary gland is a group of 6 -12 small lobules of tissue which open into the recessed area .The polystomatic portion may be absent in the feline. There are two molar salivary glands in the cat. The buccal molar salivary gland empties into the buccal cavity by several small ducts. Recently it was discovered that the membranous molar pad just lingual to the mandibular first molar tooth has numerous small salivary gland openings directed toward the tongue
