Explain in basic terms how the fly by wire system works.
ACEs recieve input signals from all pilot controls. ACEs send the control signals to the PFCs. PFCs use info from other airplane systems to compute control surface commands for enchanced handling qualities. PFCs sends these commands back to ACE which then moves the control surfaces.
You enter a cold airplane and find the EXT PWR AVAIL lights on. What must you do before selecting external power ON?
Turn battery switch to ON
What does the external power AVAIL light indicate?
External power is plugged in with voltage and frequency within limits.
What is the ELM?
Electric Load Managements system. It manages electrical AC load shed to protect critical equipment.
Will the IDG ever auto disconnect?
Yes with high generator drive temperature.
If the drive light is illuminated while in cruise, what would that mean?
Theres either low oil pressure or high oil temperature.
If you disconnect the IDG from the engine, can it be reconnected by selecting the switch a second time?
No, it must be done on the ground.
What’s the main function of the Back-Up Generators?
It provides a back up source of power for the essential equipment. During approach, it provides triple redundancy.
How does a BACKUP GEN creat DC power?
With two perm ant magnet generators in each generator.
If the RAT was deployed, what does it power?
Center hydraulic power and standby power to the C1 and C2 TRUs.
What causes the RAT to deploy?
Automatically: All three hydraulic systems are low. Both engines have failed with center hydraulic system low. Loss of power to both AC transfer buses. Manually: Press overhead button.
What will cause an APU automatic shutdown?
Fire Overspeed or loss of overspeed protection High EGT Low oil pressure High Oil Temp. APU door failure APU controller failure
What are the two modes of APU operation and when with the APU discharge it’s fire bottle automatically?
Attended and Unattended(both engines off)
It will fire bottle only in unattended mode.
When will the APU start automatically?
Dual engine flameout or loss of power to both AC transfer buses.
How do you know the APU is running?
EICAS or Status Page
If you push the FWD Cargo fire arm switch, what happens?
Arms all cargo fire extinguisher bottles
Arms the FWD compartment extinguisher valve
Turns off both lower recirculation fans
Shuts down cargo heat
Shuts down IFE system
Commands the packs to provide the minimum air flow required to provide pressurization
Shuts down the lav/galley vent fans
Puts the equipment colling system into the override mode
Shuts down Nitrogen Generation System
Why would a hydraulic fault light illuminate?
Low fluid pressure or high fluid temperature.
What are the EEC modes and what protections do we have in them?
Normal - Thrust limit, Overspeed, Autostart Overtemp
Alternative - Overspeed
Can we use wing anti-ice on the ground?
It can be switched on but valves inhibit till 5 minutes after take off or when the TAT is 10 degrees or below.
What does the engine autostart system monitor?
Hot Start Hung Start No N1 No EGT rise Insufficient air pressure for start Excess start time
What does the engine autostart system NOT monitor?
Engine oil pressure and temp.
How many start attempts will autostart make on the ground?
3
First is normal, second uses both ignitors, third reschedules fuel
What fuel pump powers the APU?
Without AC power - DC fuel pump in LEFT main tank
With AC power - Left foward AC fuel pump
How do the flap/slats work in Secondary mode?
If the slats are previously up: Slats move full down first, then flaps move.
If the slats are already at midrange: Slats move full down at flaps greater than 20
How do the flap/slats work in Alternate mode?
Slats move with flaps
Max slats is midrange and max flaps is 20
In Primary mode, what happens at Flaps 1?
Slats go to midrange
What does the CENTER hydraulic system power?
Some flight controls Alternative brakes Gear Steering Flap/Slats
The greeen RAT pressure light means what?
The Ram Air Turbine is producing normal hydraulic pressure in the center hydraulic system.
When does the TAC activate and what is it for?
The TAC is armed at 70kts and activates when there is at least a 10% thrust level difference. It helps reduce the rudder pressure required.
When does the ADIRU need to be re-aligned?
When in navigation mode for more than 24 hours.
What happens if you push the Cargo fire discharge switch?
It discharges the fire extinguisher bottles into the Armed cargo compartment. Two are discharged immediately and the other three are fired at a later time at a reduced rate.
What system prevents brake temps from getting too hot during taxi?
There are none.
Can the fuel jettison system jettison all the fuel in the tanks?
No it leaves 8500 in each main tank.
