Oral Pharyngeal Airways Flashcards
How does pharyngeal airway relieve airway obstruction
keeps base of tongue away from the posterior wall of the pharynx to prevent tongue from occluding the airway
what does the bite block do
if endotracheal tube is in it keeps from biting tongue
name 2 other indications for oral pharyngeal airways
facilitate oral suction, enhance bag-mask ventilation
why should the airway never be taped in place
bc if the pt becomes conscious the airway should be easily removable
berman airway
hard plastic, has a groove down either side to guide a suction catheter to glottic area
guedel
soft pliable material, which has an opening through the middle to allow the passing of a suction catheter into the glottic area
how do you measure endotracheal tube
measure from jaw angle to mouth
in terms of the endotracheal tube what size is better
larger is better than smaller
what is the proper insertion
remove foreign substances from the mouth
hyperextend the neck
open patients mouth and insert the airway with the tip pointing toward the roof of the mouth
observe the passing the uvula and rotate 180 degrees
complications of oral airways
injury during insertion (teeth) failure to remove quickly when airway reflexes return gagging or fighting the airway vomiting - aspiration biting causing lip or teeth damage
complications of oral airways when its not the right size
airway too large: can compress the epiglottis and blocks coughing reflex
airway too small: does not relieve obstruction
airway not right size: push the tongue backwards and obstruct the pharynx
