Taste, gastric irritation, absorption ( slow or irregular), stain teeth, contraindications
Forms of oral meds:
Solid or liquid
Solid:
Tablets (coated, chewable, effervescent), capsules ( soft, hard, SR), lozenges (aka troche), powders
Liquid:
Syrups, solutions ( oral, parental, enteral), suspensions (magma s, gels, emulsions), elixirs ( alcohol and water), tinctures (iodine)
Position for adm
Sitting, standing, or HOB up
Equipment:
EMR/ med cart, med cup, glass of water, applesauce, straw, pill cutter/crusher
Rationale:
Verify MD order, gather supplies, wash hands, prepare (drug dose), 3 checks, verify patient ID (ten checks), position, make sure meds swallowed, document, evaluate response
