Indications for use?
A
Known diabetic with an altered level of consciousness but is able to swallow.

Contraindications?
A
Unconscious. Known diabetic who has not taken insulin for days. Unable to swallow.

Side effects?
A
None if given properly. There is a risk of aspiration if the patient has an impaired or absent gag reflex

Special notes?
A
Obtain blood glucose before administration, check it again 15 minutes after administration. Pay careful attention to the patient’s airway and level of consciousness

A
15 to 25 grams
