Hyperglycemic, carbohydrate
Mechanism of action
After absorption in the GI tract, glucose is distributed to the tissues providing an increase in circulating blood glucose levels
Indications
Conscious patients with suspected hypoglycemia
Contraindications
Decreased level of consciousness, nausea, vomiting, inability to swallow
Adverse reactions / side effects
None
Adult dose / route
25 g PO in patients with intact gag reflex and ability to manage their own secretions
Pedi dose
0.5 to 1 g PO in patients with intact gag reflex and ability to manage their own secretions
Duration of Action
Onset: 10 minutes. Peak effect: Variable. Duration: Variable
Pregnancy Class
C
Special consideration
Must be swallowed. Glucose is not absorbed sublingually or buccally. Check a glucometer reading before administering oral glucose and repeat at least 10 minutes after.
