Class
Platelet Inhibitor, anti inflammatory agent
Mechanism of action
Prevents the formation of thromboxane A2, which causes platelets to clump together ( aggregate l) and form plugs that causes obstruction or constriction; has antipyretic and analgesic properties
Indications
New onset of discomfort suggestive ACS
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Relativity contraindicated in patients with active ulcer disease or asthma
Adverse reactions / side effects
Bronchospasm, anaphylaxis, wheezing in allergic patient, prolonged bleeding, GI bleeding, epigastric distress, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, reye syndrome
Drug interactions
Use with caution in patients allergic to NSAIDS
Adult dose / route
160 mg to 325 mg PO. Chewing is preferable in swallowing
Pedi dose / route
Not recommended
Duration of action
Onset : 5 to 30 minutes. Peak effect: 1 to 3 hours. Duration 3 to 6 hours

Special consideration
If there are no contraindications, non enteric coated, chewable aspirin should be given as soon as possible to all patients with a suspect ACS as soon as possible after symptoms onset.
