oral & glandular d/o Flashcards
acute non-suppurative viral infection of salivary gland in kids under 15yo; peaks in spring or tropical env.
parotitis/mumps
how is parotitis spread
airborne droplets
incubation time of parotitis? sx duration?
2-3 wks
7-10 days
sx of parotitis
low grade fever, HA, myalgia/arthralgia
anorexia, malaise
BILATERAL parotid swelling with no evidence of erythema or warmth
how is parotitis tx
support
how to prevent parotitis
get MMR vaccine 12-15mo old & 4-6 yo
inflammatory process of affected gland; can be suppurative or nonsuppurative; caused by less saliva production or flow
sialadenitis
most common infectious cause of sialadenitis
virus ex. mumps
most common causes of bacterial sialadenitis
1 staph
strep viridians
s. pneumoniae
h. influ
anaerobes
serous saliva is associated with what type of sialadenitis
baterial
how is bacterial sialadenitis tx?
hydration & abx
surgical drainage if unresponsive
rapid onset of pain & swelling over affected salivary gland; complication of chronic dehydration; fever, chills, malaise
acute suppurative sialadenitis
diff between acute suppurate sialadenitis and mumps
mumps is viral, acute has to do with bacteria
mumps is bilateral
acute has warmth, is suppurative and has dry membranes
WBC for acute suppurative sialadenitits
leukocytosis w/ neutrophilia
radiation sialadenitis
xerostomia
I-131
formation of stones in salivary glands; mostly submandibular gland (but can affect others)
sialolithiasis
2 possible etiologies of sialolithiasis
chronic sialadentitis
local injury/inflammation
pain & swelling of affected gland, intermittent swelling related to meals, production of salivary calculi (calcium, hydroxyapatite)
sialolithiasis
pathophys of sialolithiasis
stasis of salivary flow
3 ways to diagnose sialolithiasis
intraoral inspection or bimanual palpation of calculi
sialogram
CT
tx of sialolithiasis
remove calculi
remove gland if stone is w/in gland parenchyma
give lemon drops/sialogogues for stasis reversal, OJ, bimanual massage, etc
abx for 7-10 days (augmentin, dicloxacillin, cephalexin)
