what are the 3 stages in the feeding sequence
1 - ingestion - movement of food to mouth
2 - stage 1 transport - moving material to posterior teeth
3 - mechanical processing - either chewed by posterior teeth or squashed by tongue on heard palate
where are liquids and solids swallowed from
liquids - from mouth , posterior oral seal
solids - from oropharynx , no posterior oral seal
shortened dental arch
minimum of 20 functional units
deemed sufficient for mastication , aesthetics and OH
how can biting forces be improved for denture wearers
full denture wearers have reduced biting forces
supporting dentures on teeth or implant support
cantilever bridge
bridge pontic attached to an abutment tooth at one end only
not recommended if occlusal forces on pontic going to be heavy
adhesive (maryland) bridge
retainers on either side of pontic that are bonded to palatal or lingual surface of abutments - non destructable to tooth tissue
