Oral Communication Flashcards
Give me an example of a time when you were able to successfully communicate with another person, even when that individual may not have personally liked you.
Oral Communication. To speak fluently in a concise, grammatically correct, organized, precise, and persuasive manner; to convey nuances of meaning accurately; to use appropriate styles of communication to fit the audience and purpose.
At variuos times and in various roles, goals can seem at odds or personalities can conflict. Derek Hodge seemed to not like that I sided with the program leader on a decision about architecture for the client’s Incident and Problem Mgmt system. Even with the decision made, I personally followed up with Derek and went out of my way to check in on a personal and professional level to show that I cared. I also resisted the urge to ever respond to one of his emails before having a change to talk with him in person.
Tell me about a time when you were most persuasive in overcoming resistance to your ideas or point of view.

Timeline for project at Eleos. Customer had unrealistic expectations for a 30 day completion. I created a presentation that walked through goals & objectives decomposed into tasks and realistic timelines. I then had a slide that said their unrealistic 30 day completion COULD be done but here is what that timeline would look and specifically, the decisions/tasks they would need to complete and in what timeframe. The result was that the customer still wanted to push hard for a quick project but they were more understanding that their original expectation wasn’t possible. In the end, the project was still the fastest we’ve had to date but they also were able to accomplish their tasks rather quickly.
Tell me about a time when you had to use your presentation skills to influence someone’s opinion.

Have you had to “sell” an idea to your co-workers, classmates or group? How did you do it? Did they “buy” it?
