Oral Cavity and Oropharynx Flashcards
Muscles that bridge the mandible and the hyloid bone
Mylohyoid and geniohyloid muscles
Regions of the tongue
The sulcus terminalis (divides A and P), foramen caecem, lingual tonsils and puppilae
Types of pupillae
Fungiform (widespread), foliate (lateral) and valate (posterior). Taste buds not the puppilae rather they are in the pupillae.
Extrinsic muscles (4)
§ Styloglossus (pulls backwards) § Palatoglossus (elevates) □ CNX innervation § Genioglossus □ Protrusion of the tongue § Hypoglossus (depression)
Intrinsic muscles
Superior and inferior longitudinal with transverse and vertical muscles
Innervation of the tongue
Sensory
- General (touch) - CNIX (P) - CNV (A) - Special (Taste) - CNIX (P) - CNVII (A)
Name the teeth and the number
Incisors (4)
Canines (2)
Pre-Molars (4)
Molars (6)
Innervation of teeth
The superior and the inferior alveolar nerves from the maxillar and the mandibular nerves of CNV. The maxilla also innervates the external auditory meatus and theerefore can have referred pain here
Different salivary glands
Sublingual, submandibular and parotid
Role of the Soft Palate
Close off the nasal cavity during coughing, suction and swallowing. Will also close off the oral caviity to allow breathing during chewing
Muscles in the Oropharynx
2 above for elevation of the palate (levator veli palatini and Tensor veli palatini), one in the middle (Musculous uvelae) and two below for the depression of the (palatoglossus and palatopharyngeus). All innervated by CNX except tensor veli palatini which is by CNV
What is Waldeyer’s Ring?
4 tonsils, palatine, adenoid, lingual and tubal
