Oral Biology: Speech Flashcards
What are the two phases of the speech process?
- Generation of sound by vocal folds setting the air particles into vibration - known as PHONATION
- Modify the sound to produce specific complex speech sounds - RESONANCE and ARTICULATION
Which structure vibrates to produce voiced sounds?
Vocal chords vibrate
Which unvoiced sounds (breathed) require articulation only?
- ss
- p
- ff
What are the structures/systems involved in phonation? (2)
- respiratory system
- layrnx (vocal cords)
What structures/sysyems are involved in resonance?
pharynx, oral and nasal cavities
What structures/systems are involved in articulation?
lips, tongue, teeth, palate
How is phonation initiated?
Phonation is initiated by active closing of the vocal folds
What is the initial phase of phonation followed by?
What does the vibration of vocal folds lead to?
Sound
In order for phonation to take place, what must be brought together?
vocal folds must be brought together
Name three things that frequency of fold vibration is determined by
1, Size of vocal fold
- fold tension (increased tension of vocalis muscle leads to increase in frequency)
- force of expiration
Name two things that modify sound to produce complex speech sounds
- Resonance
- Articulation
What does resonance refer to?
Resonance refers to a vibration of large amplitude produced by a small vibration near the same frequency of vibration as the natural frequency of the resonating system
What is natural frequency linked to?
- shape/volume
- material
