Optimisations Flashcards

Q

Steps for Optimisations?

A

First make a function out of the question and substitute one equation into the other. Use differentiation set =0 to find the critical points of the function and work out whether they are all maximum and minimum. Substitute into the original function to find the output of the equation. Use second derivative to show it is a maximum or minimum

Q

Is a f’‘(x) Maximum or Minimum?

A

d^2y/dx^2 > 0 means it is a minimum point,
if d^2y/dx^2 <0 it is a maximum point.
if d^2y/dx^2 = 0 it is a point of inflexion
