Optics Flashcards
Define incandescent light
Light of the result of a high temperature such as a candle
Electric discharge
Produced by an electric current running through gas, such as neon light or lightning
Define phosphorescence
Phosphorus absorbs UV light and emits it in the dark
Define Florescence
Absorbs UV light and immediately releases it as visible light
Define chemiluminescence
Light as a product of a chemical reaction, ex glow sticks
Define bioluminescence
Chemical reactions producing light within a living organism
Define triboluminescence
Light be crystals (scratching, crushed, rubbed)
State the laws of reflection
The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection
The incident ray, reflected ray, and normal all lie on the same plane
Regular reflection occurs on what surface?
Smooth
Diffuse reflection occurs on what surface?
Rough
What way does light always travel?
Straight
In a plane mirror, distance between the real and virtual object is?
The same
In a plane mirror, the reflected object is? (salt)
Same size
Upright
Behind mirror
Virtual
What shape is a concave mirror?
Inside edge faces object
What are the four rules for concave mirrors?
- A ray traveling through the focal point will reflect parallel to the principal axis
- A ray traveling parallel to the principal axis will reflect through the focal point
- A ray traveling through c will reflect upon itself
- A ray traveling through the vertex follows the laws of reflection (iangle = rangle)
