Optical fibres Flashcards
How do transparent materials affect waves?
slows them down
what is the incident ray?
the actual ray that strikes a surface
What is the angle of incidence?
angle between the incident ray and the normal.
What is the refracted ray?
change of direction, velocity due to changing the medium it travels.
What is the angle of refraction?
angle between the refracted ray and the normal.
Refractive index = ?
speed of light in vacuum / speed in material medium
What is the critical angle?
angle of incidence that creates a 90-degrees angle of refraction
What is the Sin of the critical angle (Sin0c)
Sin of critical angle = 1/refractive index
What is total internal reflection?
When the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle.
What are optical fibres?
Long thin cylinders of glass/plastic .
How are optical fibres used?
when light hits the sides of the optical fiber it does at angles greater than critical angle meaning all the rays are internally reflected
