Optic Neuritis Flashcards
what is Optic neuritis
inflammation of the optic nerve
most common causes of ON
Idiopathic ON, the most common form of ON, is an inflammatory optic neuropathy in the absence of evidence of a systemic inflammatory disease.
-manifestation as multiple sclerosis most commonly
in what disease can optic neuritis be a common presentation
multiple sclerosis- demyelinating
other causes of Optic neuritis
Demyelinating lesions (multiple sclerosis is the most common cause of demyelinating ON)
Autoimmune disorders
Infectious conditions
how does optic neuritis typically present (triad of symptoms)
visual loss, periocular pain, dyschromatopsia
describe symptom features of optic neuritis
ON manifests as the subacute or acute onset of pain in the eye and pain with eye movements and loss of vision, typically with central or centrocaecal scotoma
colour vision lost
what investigations will be done
mri of optic nerve,
fbc, crp, esr
check for antibodies
ANA (present in autoimmune conditions)
treatment for optic neuritis
IV methylprednisolone
why is oral prednisolone contraindicated
risk of second episode
what is the prognosis for optic neuritis
Optic neuritis (ON) recovers spontaneously, typically over several weeks or months. Generally the visual prognosis of ON is good, with only approximately 8% having a residually decreased visual acuity of less than 20/40.
