Opthalmic And Maxillary Divison Flashcards
The ophthalmic division enters the orbit via what?
Superior orbital fissure (just like 3, 4, and 6)
Is the ophthalmic division sensory, motor, or both?
Sensory function only
Where does the ophthalmic division carry sensory information from?
Carries sensation from the skin over the nose, forehead, and scalp
Carries sensation from mucous membrane in frontal and sphenoidal tissues and membrane covering nasal septum
How many branches does the ophthalmic division give off?
Gives off four branches
What are the names of the four branches of the ophthalmic division
Meningeal nerve
Lacrimal nerve
Frontal nerve
Nasociliary nerve
Where is the meningeal branch or the tentorial branch given off and what does it supply?
Gives off before the ophthalmic division leaves the superior orbital fissure
Supplies dura mater lining the middle cranial fossa
What is the lacrimal nerve known for?
Being the smallest of the three main nerve branches of the ophthalmic divison
How does the lacrimal nerve travel and what does it supply
Travels along the superior aspect of the lateral rectus muscle. Passes through the lacrimal gland, which it supplies, and reaches the skin of the upper eyelid
The lacrimal nerve also has parasympathetic innervations as well, describe the pathway and what it does
Carries parasympathetic fibers to the lacrimal gland.
Fibers originate in the pterygopalatine ganglion (CN 7) and reach the lacrimal gland by way of the zygomatic nerve (maxillary division branch)
What is the frontal nerve well known for in the ophthalmic division
Being the largest major branch
Does the frontal nerve give off branches?
Yes, two branches
What are the two branches of the frontal nerve, ophthalmic division trigeminal
Supratrochlear nerve
Supraorbital nerve
What does the supratrochlear nerve supply?
Conveys sensation form the medial corner of the eye
What does the supraorbital nerve supply
Carries sensation from the conjunctiva, upper eyelid, and forehead as well as the mucous membrane lining the frontal sinus
Does the nasociliary nerve give off branches?
Yes, three of them before dividing into two terminal branches, the anterior ethmoid and infratrochlear nerves
What are the three branches of the nasociliary nerve before the terminal two nerves?
Communicating branch
Long ciliary nerve
Posterior ethmoid
What does the communicating branch supply?
Goes to the ciliary ganglion
What does the long ciliary nerve supply
Supplies the eyeball
What does the posterior ethmoid nerve supply?
Carries sensory information from the sphenoidal and ethmoidal sinuses
What does the anterior ethmoid nerve supply and how does it do it?
Supplies the skin over the nose by way of the external nasal nerve
Supplies the mucous membrane covering the anterior part of the nasal septum by way of the internal nasal nerve
What does the infratrochlear nerve supply?
Supplies the medial corner of the eye, including the lacrimal sac
The maxillary divison enters the ______ through the ________
Pterygopalatine fossa
Foramen rotundum
Does the maxillary divison have sensory, motor, or both?
Sensory function only
What does the maxillary division carry for sensory functions?
Sensation from the skin between the eyes and mouth, over the cheeks and temples
Carries information from the mucosa lining the maxillary sinuses, nasal conchae, palate, and gingiva
How many branches of the maxillary division
Four branches
What are the four branches of the maxillary division
Middle meningeal nerve
Zygomatic nerve
Two or three ganglionic branches
Infraorbital nerve
Where does the middle meningeal nerve travel and what does it supply
Given off before the division exits the foramen rotundum
Supplies the meninges of the middle cranial fossa
Where does the zygomatic nerve enter?
Enters the orbit through the inferior orbital fissure
What three nerves does the zygomatic nerve give off?
Communicating branch
Zygomaticotemporal nerve
Zygomaticofacial
What does the communicating branch do?
Carries postganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the pterygopalatine ganglion to the lacrimal gland
What does the zygomaticotemporal nerve do?
Supplies the skin over the temple
What does the zygomaticofacial nerve do
Supplies skin over the cheek
What do the two to three ganglion branches do?
Carry sensory information from the upper pharynx, nasal cavity, and palate through the pterygopalatine ganglion to the maxillary division
Where does the infraorbital nerve travel and what does it do?
Travels through the infraorbital fissure and infraorbital canal to supply the lower eyelid, skin over the upper jaw and the maxillary sinus
Before entering the infraorbital fissure, gives off three branches that carry sensory info from the teeth
Posterior, middle, anterior superior alveolar nerves
What is the plexus above the alveoli? What divison does it come from
The superior dental plexus and is from the infraorbital nerve
What is the pterygopalatine ganglion used for in the maxillary division
Used to distribute postganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the pterygopalatine ganglion
How does preganglionic parasympathetic fibers reach the ganglion?
Reaches the ganglion from the facial nerve by way of the greater petrosal nerve
How does postganglionic sympathetic fibers reach the ganglion
They come from the superior cervical ganglion and pass through the pterygopalatine ganglion
What else travels through the ptergopalatine ganglion
Sensory fibers also pass through the ganglion
