Opthalmic Flashcards
1
Q
Explain visual pathways
A
Temporal visual field falls on nasal retina
Cross over of nasal retinal fibres at optic chasm
2
Q
Symptoms of visual disturbance?
A
Loss of vision, visual field defect, flashing light, floaters, double vision, droopy lids, pain
3
Q
Causes of red eye?
A
HIGI
- Infection e.g conjunctivitis
- Subconjunctival haemorrhage - spontaneous (anticoagulant, high BP)
- Iritis - inflammatory process
- Acute glaucoma - painful red eye w/ decreasing vision
4
Q
Cause of visual loss?
A
CORD DG
- Cataract - opacity of lens
- Macular degeneration - age related change
- Retinal detachment - retina becomes deprived blood - flashing light and floaters
- Central retinal artery occlusion
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Chronic glaucoma
5
Q
Difference between wet and dry macular degeneration?
A
Wet - new blood vessel growth
Dry - deposit of drusen
6
Q
How does diabetic retinopathy cause blindness?
A
Microvascular change in retinal vessels
Vessels can become leaky = retinal oedema
If macula affected - retinal ischaemia
