What is the difference between being a professional and a member of a profession.
Many jobs require employees to demonstrate professional behaviour (like IT developer or hair dresser have to be professional). Being a member of a profession is different because it means that one is part of a regulatory body for their given profession. It means:
- To be part of something bigger then yourself, a community w/ shared goals and identity.
- Demonstrate competencies, have specialized training, use knowledge and perform skills well.
- Uphold high standards, respectful of others, put pt interest first, know your limit, avoid bias.
- Recognized for expertise by a society and colleagues/ORDER.
- Regulatory body=Protect Public, All HCPs have a regulatory body.
What are the key features of a health care professional?
Member of a collegial discipline that:
- Regulates itself.
- Base of specialized knowledge.
- Sets and enforce standards.
- Service orientation w/ Code of ethics.
What are the defining features of being a professional?
- Competence and expertise
- Commitment to excellence and integrity
- Responsibility to serve (care for other) above self-interest or reward.
What is the Professional Code of Quebec?
- Legal framework regulating all orders in the Qc professional system
- Regulates the practice of professions.
- 54 professions overseen by 46 Ordres.
- Supervise professionals linked to regulatory bodies.
What are the two types of professions under the professional code?
- Professions w/ reserved titles (+/- reserved activities)
PT falls under this category. - Professions w reserved titles and exclusive right to practice.
Exclusive right to practice: physicians, lawyers, engineers. Only these professionals have there gift to practice certain things like surgery.

- What is the primary purpose of professional orders?

What are the professional activities reserved to members of the OPPQ?
- Assess physical function limitations and disabilities related to the neurological, musculoskeletal and cardiopulmonary systems
- Determine a treatment plan
- Apply treatment in order to obtain optimal functional performance

Assess neuromusculoskeletal function (physical function limitation/disability)
Functional assessment
Introduce instrument or finger in the human body beyond the labia majora or anal margin (perineal reeducation)
Introduce instrument in the human body in and beyond the pharynx or the nasal vestibule (chest physio)
Use invasive forms of energy (electrotherapy)*
Provide treatment for wounds *
Make decisions as to the use of restraint measures
Insert needles under the dermis to reduce inflammation (Certification)
Perform spinal and joint manipulations (Certification)

Nees prior assessment either by a PT or a medical diagnosis.
