Why did the conservatives long oppose the Home Rule?
Because they supported the Ulster Unionists who were Protestants living in the North east of Ireland, the unionists were in favour of remaining part of Britain
What else did the Conservatives argue against home rule for?
- they said Irish Home rule would undermine Britain’s great power status by breaking up the UK & Empire
- they said the Liberals had no right to change constitution of the U.K. As it wasn’t an issue at the 1910 election

- shipbuilding and textile industry centred on Belfast
- Ulster Protestants didn’t want to lose their control over this wealth
- Belfast had more in common with Liverpool than Dublin
- Ulster businessmen didn’t want their businesses taxed heavily to support poorer, rural parts of Ireland
