Opportunistic infection Flashcards
Infectivity
the ability of a pathogen to establish an infection
Colonisation
the process by which a species spreads to new areas
Opportunistic infection
Where the occurrence or severity of an infection is determined by patient, not by microbial factors.
Exogenous infections
direct inoculation of organism into patients without colonization
~ rare + easy to prevent
Endogenous infection
infections that are caused by already colonizing microorganisms
Early endogenous infection
colonizing flora which patient had before hospitalization (S.pneumoniae, E.coli)
Late Endogenous
hospital flora which which firstly colonizes patients body, and then can cause infection flora (MRSA, P.aeruginosa)
Hospital Acquired Infections
infections that are acquired in hospital, not being present in incubation at admission (no time limit)
High risk
operation theatre
sterile units
incubators
Moderate risk
patient rooms
examination rooms
waiting rooms
Low risk
corridors
cafés
