Antibiotics Flashcards
Antibiotic
Selectively toxic substances to microorganisms which kill or inhibit them but without harming the patient
Bactericidal
kill bacteria
Bacteriostatic
prevents reproduction
Antimicrobial resistance
the ability of an organism to resist the action of an antimicrobial drug
Intrinsic resistance
occurs due to NORMAL genetics, structural or physiological state of organism
Acquired resistance
results from ALTERED genetic, structural or physiological state of the organisms
Disc diffusion test
standard zone measuring interpretation
used in practical
E-test
~ uses antibiotic strips
~ standard reading interpretation
~ determines the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)
Automated sensitivity test
~ emulsify sample and inject into pods on card
~ after 4hrs, organism is identified and resistances checked
Molcular detection
PCR can be used to identify certain genes
e.g. Mec A gene in MRSA
