Opiod agonists and antagonists Flashcards
Used to counteract the effects of opiods. Whats the caveat?
Naloxone (narcan). Potent blockage of opiate receptors but shorter half-life than opiods so maintain dose until opiod is cleared
partial agonist at mu receptors, antagonist at kappa
Buprenorphine (think BU=MU receptor)
opiod limited to GI tract
Loperamide
Fast acting, uber-potent, short-duration of action with little heart activity make this drug good for surgery
Fentanyl
The most commonly prescribed drug (2002-2012) is metabolized how?
Hydrocodone by conjugation
Opiod with serous cardiac effects (prolonged QT) if dosed to high or too long term
Methadone
weak mu agonist that can still produce depedence
Tramadol
Kappa receptor partial agonist, mu receptor antagonist/partial agonist
Pentazocine
Pentazocine or Buprenoorphine is more likely to precipitate withdrawl in opiod dependent people.
Pentazocine
Contraindications of morphine use
Decreased respiratory reserves (asthma, emphysema, kyphoscoliosis, cor pulmonale), Head injuries, Pregnancy
Opiod drug interactions
Any CNS depressant
Opiod for mild-moderate pain
Codeine. Used in conjunction with aspirin or acetaminophen for moderate pain.
