Ddx of red and tender eye

A

Probability: conjunctivitis (bacterial, adenovirus or allergic)

Serious do not miss:

  • acute glaucoma
  • uveitis (iritis, choroiditis)
  • corneal ulcer
  • herpes simplex keratitis
  • penetrating injury
  • orbital cellulitis

Pitfalls

  • foreign body or trauma
  • scleritis / episcleritis
  • Blepharitis

  • Central or branch retinal artery occlusion
  • Nonarteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy
