Conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers (ulcerative keratitis), dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca), glaucoma, uveitis & cataracts.
What are the three essential tests that a veterinarian would use when investigating eye disease in dogs and cats?
A Schirmer tear test, fluorescein stain and measurement of intraocular pressure (tonometry).
What is being tested with a Schirmer tear test?
The quantity of tears that an animal is producing.
What is being tested with a fluorescein stain?
Testing for the presence of a corneal ulcer.
In what situation is it inappropriate for a topical eye drop containing corticosteroids to be used in an animal?
When that animal has a corneal ulcer.
What test should be performed before using a corticosteroid in the eye of an animal?
A fluorescein stain to ensure that there is no ulcer in the eyes.
What drug is licensed for the treatment of “dry eye” in dogs?
Cyclosporine topical ophthalmic ointment tradename Optimmune.
What drug is used for pain in corneal ulcers?
Atropine drops.
What substance harvested from patients is used to help heal complicated corneal ulcers?
Serum drops.
What substance is used to keep an animal’s eye moist during anesthesia? What other uses do these substances have?
A tear gel. They are also commonly used to help in the treatment of “dry eye” and corneal ulcers.
When administering more than one drug in an eye what extra steps need to be taken?
5 Minutes should be left between each drug and the thickest drugs (eg ointments or gels) should be applied last.
