Visual Accuity
Snellen - 20’
Rosenbaum - 10-14”
Visual Acuity Abbreviations
OD - oculus dexter (right)
OS - oculus sinister (left)
OU - oculus uterque (both)
Emmetropia
normal vision
presbyopia
aging vision - lens looses ability to focus
Hyperopia
Farsightedness - difficulty with closeup vision
Myopia
Nearsightedness - difficulty with distant vision
Lacrimal Apparatus
- tears produced in lacrimal gland
- wash over eye and drain into puncta
- drain into lacrimal sac into nasolacrimal duct
Anterior Chamber Depth
normal - fluid drains
abnormal - constricted, fluid won’t drain.
Tangential lighting, iris should light up.
Physical Exam of the External Eye
Inspect Adnexa palpate lacrimal gland inspect sclera and conjunctiva assess with ambient light and pen light assess anterior chamber with penlight pupil response and accommodation extraoccular movements

Cover/ uncover test

Types of Strabismus
Esotropia - inward crossed
Exotropia - turned out eyes
Hyper/hypo tropia - vertical misalignment
Opthalmascope Filters
Middle = no filter X = polarizing filter Green = red free light
Aperture
small, medium, or large
Fixation (crosshairs aperture)
Slit - determines location of lesion
Cobalt - fluorescence
Documentation of the Retinal Exam
presence or absence of red reflex color of dis and crispness of margins cup to disc ratio (.5) A/V ration 2/3 Background retina - general color, hemorrhage, exudates Macula / fovea
