Thyroidectomy (8 Steps)

Answer 1

1) Position: neck extended
2) Horizontal (Kocher) incision inferior to cricoid cartilage
3) Divide Platysma, create subplatysmal flaps, divide strap muscles
4) Divide upper pole close to gland to avoid SLN and upper parathyroid
5) Retract thyroid medially to identify RLN in tracheoesophageal grove
6) Carry dissection close to thyroid inferiorly
7) Once lobe mobilized, divide off isthmus, repeat opposite side
8) Reapproximate strap muscles, platysma and skin
