What is operation Shader?

A

The UK’s contribution to the international military coalition against Daesh (ISIL). It began over five years ago at the request of the Iraqi government.

The RAF’s involvement includes humanitarian aid airdrops, reconnaissance (ISTAR) and airstrikes. As of January 2019, according to the MoD; 1700 British airstrikes had killed or injured 4315 enemy fighters in Iraq and Syria, with one civilian casualty.

The UK’s contribution to the NATO led Baltic Air policing mission, a collective peacetime mission safeguarding the integrity of the allies airspace. This involves the execution of QRA in allied airspace under coordination of NATO allied air command.

On the third of June 2020, the UK sent a detachment of Typhoons (GR4) along with 150 personnel to Siauliai Air Base, Lithuania from No. 6 squadron RAF based at RAF Lossiemouth.

This is the sixth detachment of RAF Typhoons in support of this mission.
