operational terms
define secure
a tactical mission task that involves preventing a unit, facility or geographical location from being damaged or destroyed as a result of enemy action; physical occupation not required
define seize
a tactical mission task that involves taking possession of a designated area using overwhelming force; must physically occupy the ground
define clear
a tactical mission task that that requires the commander to remove all enemy forces and eliminate organized resistance within an assigned area
define delay
when a force under pressure trades space for time by slowing down the enemy’s momentum and inflicting maximum damage on enemy forces without becoming decisively involved
define disrupt
- A tactical mission task in which a commander integrates direct and indirect fires, terrain, and obstacles to upset an enemy’s formation or tempo, interrupt the enemy’s timetable, or cause enemy forces to commit prematurely or attack in piecemeal fashion.
- An obstacle effect that focuses fire planning and obstacle effort to cause the enemy to break up its formation and tempo, interrupt its timetable, commit breaching assets prematurely, and attack in a piecemeal effort.
Define on-order mission
- A mission to be executed at an unspecified time
- A mission which the force will accomplish at a later time; second in priority to any primary mission for planning; included in paragraph 2 of the OPORD.
Define be-prepared mission
- A mission assigned to a unit that might be executed.
- A mission which the force may accomplish at a later time; next in priority to any on order mission for planning; not included in paragraph 2 of the OPORD.
Define destroy
- A tactical mission task that physically renders an enemy force combat-ineffective until it is reconstituted. Alternatively, to destroy a combat system is to damage it so badly that it cannot perform any function or be restored to a usable condition without being entirely rebuilt.
- Physical destruction over psychological destruction
Define defeat
- To render a force incapable of achieving its objectives.
- May or may not entail the destruction of any part of the enemy force
- Psychological over physical destruction
Define screen (not on SG)
- A type of security operation that primarily provides early warning to the protected force.
- To provide early warning for the main body by maintaining contact with the opposing force
- Does not become decisively engaged (loses the ability to maneuver)
- Uses R&S OPs with the ability to execute indirect fires on the opposing force
- Normally within indirect fire support range of the main body force
Define Guard (not on SG)
- A type of security operation done to protect the main body by fighting to gain time while preventing enemy ground observation of and direct fire against the main body.
- To prevent ground observation, direct fire, or surprise attack on the main body force
- Can accept decisive engagement
- Normally within indirect fire support range of the main body
- Guard force may require augmentation to provide sufficient combat power for mission task success
