When to consider a Red Flag Warning?
Consider issuing a Red Flag Warning when a change in circumstances presents a significant risk to safety, or is predicted to present a significant risk to safety.
Ensure personnel who receive a Red Flag Warning complete the following: (4)
- Confirm the Red Flag Warning has been received immediately.
- Repeat the key points of the warning back to the sender to demonstrate understanding.
- Notify all responding and support agency personnel of the Red Flag Warning under your supervision/in reporting line.
- Obtain a confirmation from these personnel that they have received the warning.
Ways to convey Red Flag Warnings (4)
- Radio
- Telephone
- Written notice
- Verbal
When to issue a Mayday?
Transmit a Mayday immediately when in a life threatening situation, or when others are in a life threatening situation.
How do you send a Mayday? (5)
Utilise the Radio Duress Alarm (where available) to initiate the Mayday, and immediately transmit the following:
* “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday”
* Name of person transmitting or unit/call sign
* Location
* Situation report/assignment/task
* Resources/assistance
When to issue “Red, Red, Red”
Transmit a “Red, Red, Red” signal to send an urgent message where extreme radio congestion exists, in order to gain priority access to Communications Centre and the fireground channel(s).
Examples when Red Red Red may be used: (3)
- A word back message requiring the escalation of an incident.
- A general message communicating a significant fireground safety issue.
- A Red Flag Warning.
When to transmit Emergency Evacuation Schedule (4)
- Imminent structural collapse
- Bushfire burn over
- Landslip
- Uncontrolled release of gas

Three Emergency Evacuation signals - what do they sound like?
Evacuation: 3 blasts at 1 second duration (wait 10 secons and repeat)
Quiet or cease operations: 1 blast for 3 seconds
Resume operations: 1 blast for 3 seconds followed by 1 blast for 1 second
