Operating Around Airports Key Terms and Definitions Flashcards
Above Ground Level (AGL)
above ground level.
Aeronautical Advisory Communications Stations (UNICOM)
Completely automated weather, radio check capability and airport advisory information and will be published in the Airport/Facility Directory and approach charts
Air Traffic Control (ATC)
The continuous broadcast of recorded non-control information in selected terminal areas.
Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS)
The continuous broadcast of recorded non-control information in selected terminal areas.
Base Leg
A short descending flight path at right angles to the approach end extended centerline of the landing runway.
Chart Supplement U.S.
(formerly Airport/Facility Directory) provides the most comprehensive information on a given airport.
Crosswind Leg
A short climbing flight path at right angles to the departure end of the runway.
Downwind Leg
A long level flight path parallel to but in the opposite direction of the landing runway.
Final Approach
A descending flight path in the direction of landing along the extended runway centerline from the base leg to the runway.
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
The United Nations agency for developing the principles and techniques of international air navigation, and fostering planning and development of international civil air transport.
Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC)
is a collaboration between FAA and Industry. It directly supports UAS integration into the airspace.
Magnetic Variation
The angle between true north (TN) and magnetic north (MN).
MULTICOM
A mobile service not open to public correspondence used to provide communications essential to conduct the activities being performed by or directed from private aircraft.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aeronautics and space research.
Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC)
A person who holds a remote pilot certificate with an sUAS rating and has the final authority and responsibility for the operation and safety of an sUAS operation conducted under part 107.
Risk Management
The goal of risk management is to proactively identify safety-related hazards and mitigate the associated risks.
Runway
A defined rectangular area on a land airport prepared for the landing and takeoff run of aircraft along its length.
Runway Exclusion Zone
A rectangular area—
centered on the centerline of an active runway of an airport immediately around which the airspace is designated as class B, class C, or class D airspace at the surface under part 71 of title 14, Code of Federal Regulations; and the length of which extends parallel to the runway’s centerline to points that are 1 statute mile from each end of the runway and the width of which is ½ statute mile.
Sectional Chart
Aeronautical chart. A map used in air navigation containing all or part of the following: topographic features, hazards and obstructions, navigation aids, navigation routes, designated airspace, and airports.
True North (TN)
The direction along Earth’s surface towards the geographic North Pole.
Upwind Leg
A flight path parallel to and in the direction of the landing runway. It is offset from the runway and opposite the downwind leg.
