Operant Confitioning Flashcards
What’s operant conditioning
when a learners behaviour is followed by a consequence or reinforcement
Positive Reinforcement
- increases the frequency of a behaviour being applied
- eg. if you finish homework early , u get to go to the cinemas
reinforcement :
occurs when an event following a behaviour makes its repetition more likely
negative reinforcement
is when something unpleasant is removed following a behaviour
eg taking away chores
primary and secondary reinforcement
primary reinforcers are resending had they biological significance : food ect
secondary’s are powerful as they’re associated with primary : money
punishment :
occurs when an event following the behaviour makes its repetition less likely
positive punishment
is when something unpleasant is introduced following a behaviour , eg a slap
negative punishment
occurs when something nice is removed
eg phone being taken away
The skinner box 1984
box contained food pellets that’s could be released as reinforcers when the animal learned to do something. using reinforcement and punishment , skinner could train the animals to learn target behaviours
A03 strengths :
P1 : testing with these factors allow for standardisation which is RELIABLE
p2 : skinner and other have conducted hundreds of lab experiments showing operant conditioning in animals with consistent findings about the ability to modify behaviour : RELIABLE
A03 : weaknesses
p1: operant conditioning can explain a wider range f behaviours than classical conditioning, however it’s still incomplete as an explanation for the acquisition for all new behaviour eg new learning behaviours an animal has never performed before
p2:
operant conditioning condition points 8 marks
- reward and punishment are the major ways in which societies regulate the behaviour of citizens especially in places in involving children : eg gold star
- however skinners sims was to create a society which in tightly controlled ehich raised issues for individual liberty
