Operant Conditioning Flashcards
What is positive reinforcement?
Strengthening a behaviour by rewarding it
What is negative reinforcement?
Removing an unpleasant reinforcer to strengthen behaviour
What is punishment?
Weakening or eliminating a response or behaviour by applying an unpleasant stimulus or removing a potentially rewarding stimulus
Schedules of Reinforcement:
What is continuous?
Reward is given every time behaviour is as wanted
Schedules of Reinforcement:
What is fixed ratio?
Applying the reinforcement after a specific NUMBER of behaviours
(Rewards given after a certain number of behaviours)
Schedules of Reinforcement:
What is variable ratio?
The proportion of reinforcers to responses might have a certain average
(Rewards given at random intervals)
Schedules of Reinforcement:
What is fixed interval?
Applying the reinforcer after a specific amount of TIME
Rewards given at regular intervals
Schedules of Reinforcement:
What is variable interval?
Reinforcement after a variable amount of TIME
Rewards given over time but not at regular intervals
What is reinforcement?
Occurs when there is a reward for doing something
What is shaping?
Learned behaviours are gradually built up through a process of successive reinforcements for behaviours that are progressively closer to the desired behaviour
