Limits of confidentiality
If you tell me or I suspect…
you are a danger to self
you are a danger to others
there is any abuse, neglect, or sexual abuse of a minor/child
there is any possession of child pornographic material
there is any abuse, including financial, physical, sexual, or neglect of an older adult or a dependent adult
a subpoena or court order
What are other important things to bring up to your client in the opening?
Dual relationships (do not mention sex pamphlet), involuntary hospitalization, and duty-to-warn
How to assess for compentency?
Give the MOCA or do an MSE
Which ROIs would you give
Emergency contact, any other health providers (psychiatrist or therapist), insurance if they are using insurance for payment, anyone else they want involved in their care
Office and billing policies to bring up
If financial hardship is in the prompt, bring up discussing a sliding scale fee agreement with the client
Overall, discuss boundaries when not in sessions/during non working hours, be respectful of staff working here, etc
What to do for making sure you have informed consent
Ask client to read and sign a consent to treatment form and explain it/answer any questions. Make sure they understand that they can leave treatment whenever they would like
What does HIPAA stand for and how do you discuss this with clients
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
Discuss that everything they say is confidential (except for limits) and provide a handout that fully outlines all hipaa guidelines. Also discuss how their information will be stored per hipaa guidelines (HIPAA secure box and zoom accounts if telehealth is needed)
