Open Water 5 Flashcards
What is a minimum surface interval?
The minimum amount of time between dives, if there’s a specific depth/time you want to be sure to be able to do on the next dive
How to find minimum surface interval?23
There’s a RDP table for it, just repeatedly check the dive computer, use a planning function on a dive computer or app
How long to wait after diving before flying?
12 hours if just 1 dive, 18 hours if multiple dives or multi day diving
How to accommodate cold or strenuous dives?
Avoid when possible, otherwise beware you’ll be taxing the body more. Try to adjust to a conservative mode on the dive computer or add 4m/10ft to the depth on dive tables
When to make emergency decompression stops?
Ideally in recreational dives, never. It’s any time you are over the no stop limits.
What to do if surfacing when skipping an emergency stop (such as if cylinder was empty)?
Get 100% oxygen if available and take a few days rest
What is gas narcosis?
When feeling intoxicated from breathing pressurized air, due to increased dissolved gasses slowing communication between brain and body
What to do if feeling gas narcosis
Signal buddy and ascend slightly
How to use a compass?
It tells you where you’re going.
Hold it level, use the straight (“Lubber”) line to point where you’re going
Rotate the bezel towards the direction of travel so you know which way you’re going and will come back from
What is the open water depth limit?
18m / 60 ft
Practice removing the scuba kit underwater
Kneel in a lunge position, deflate BCD, remove kit with left arm first to keep regulator in mouth (likewise put right arm on first to keep regulator in mouth)
