Open Water 4 Flashcards
How should you carry a mesh utility bag?
Normally in your hands, not attached to gear. You want to be able to drop it quickly if needed
What is the minimum information that should go in a log book?
- Dive Location
- Dive Time
- Depth
- Buddy’s name
How to avoid oxygen toxicity?
Never go below 40m/130 ft (the general maximum for recreational diving)
What type of air should you use as an Open Water diver?
Just the normal kind. Nitrox/EANx has extra oxygen and is fairly safe at shallow depths, but generally best avoided.
100% oxygen is dangerous. Only for highly technical divers.
What affects how much nitrogen your body absorbs?
Depth and time. Longer and deeper (higher pressure) = more nitrogen in the body
What is a dive computer used for?
It estimates based on depth and time how much nitrogen is in the body.
What is a “no stop” or “no decompression” limit?
This is how long you can spend at a depth safely and then ascend without a mandatory safety stop
What depth do you use on dive tables?
The deepest you will be during the dive. No adjustment for time spent at other depths, only use the most conservative
What is a repetitive dive? What are the concerns?
What it sounds like. Effectively diving while there’s still nitrogen in the body, therefore shortening no stop limits
How do you track residual nitrogen?
Use the same dive computer day to day
What is a surface interval?
How long you were out of the water between dives
What information does a Dive Computer give you?
No Stop/No Decompression Limits
Depth
Elapsed Time
No stop time remaining
Ascent rate (it should warn you if you need to slow down)
Emergency decompression (it will calculate stops if needed)
