Open Fireplaces Flashcards
What is appropriate log grate sizing for OFP?
Grate should be no more than 2/3 the width and 1/2 to 2/3 the firebox width and depth.
Also, grate should not be excessively warped or torn.
What are oxygen depletion sensors (ODS)?
A device in vent free gas logs that shut off the flow of gas if levels of oxygen in room falls below 18%.
What to do about a loose or leaky clean out door?
Recommend corrective action- clean out doors should be tight fitting and not allow air to enter the venting system as this could cause venting issues.
What to look for on inspection of factory built fireplaces?
- Rust
- Clearance-most are 2”
- Locking bands/twist connectors
- Parts are the same consistent brand and airflow arrows are pointing in correct direction
- Blocked inlets and outlets
2 common types of factory built fireplaces
- Built-in factory built metal fireplaces including venting system
- Site constructed masonry unit composed of pre-cast pieces. Can be composed of pre-cast pieces. Can be vented to factory chimney or masonry chimney.
What is a masonry heater?
A vented heating system of predominately masonry construction having a mass of at least 1760 lbs, excluding the chimney and base.
Has heat exchange channels above firebox firebox
Fire 1-2x a day with very hot and rapid fires and stays hot for a long time
Clearances- 4” sides and rear, 8” above
Masonry heater chimney requirements
Must be vented into double wall insulated metal chimney
How is the buildup for masonry heaters?
They burn very clean- should only see fly ash and not need to be swept often. If soot/creosote is present, there is an operating system or design malfunction. Masonry heaters are more sensitive to unseasoned wood.
What is appropriate smoke chamber sizing for OFPs?
Height should be no more than the width of the firebox opening and no more than 45 degrees from vertical.
Exposed corbeling doesn’t meet modern standards. Current standards call for smoke chamber to be parged smooth.
