What are the hand brushes?
U-brush, most versitile
pot brush, long handled
Smoke chamber brush, rotary
Wire brush with scraper
Soft bristle/foxtail/millbury, used for soot/ash in firebox
What are benefits of polypropylene chimney brushes?
Can be used for coal and oil flues, as well as lined flues and factory chimneys. Less aggressive than wire brushes.
What are the ladder classifications?
IAA- construction/industrial- 375lb max
IA- construction/industrial- 300 lb max
I- construction/industrial- 250lb max
II- tradesman/farm- 225lb max
III- household- 200lb max I- construction
What are the differences between aluminum and fiberglass ladders?
Aluminum is lighter but conducts electricity.
Fiberglass is heavier but is less of a conductor.
What are the different types of wire brushes?
Oil-tempered steel wire brushes come in round, square, rectangle, and oval shapes. Round wire bristles give average scraping action and can be reversed. Flat wire bristles are stiffer and more aggressive, are best for a rooftop sweep, but cannot reverse.
Steel wire brushes damage liners and factory built chimneys.
Steel wire brushes cannot be used in coal or oil flues due to sulfur corrosion effects.
How do we remove glazed creosote?
hand tools- scrapers
mechanical- rotary chains
chemical- liquid catalyst on fire, powder on fire, liquid/dry powder applications directly to flue (ex PCR- poultice creosote remover)
What are the rotary heads?
Steel cable strands- rotary loop or individual strands
Weed trimmer-like line
Chains
What are the different kinds of rod and connectors?
Rods can be fiberglass, polypropylene, nylon, or metal.
Fiberglass rods have threaded ends (NPT) or button lock. Includes viper.
Polypropylene rods are more flexible
Nylon rods are most flexible, act as a good starter rod for an offset or thimble
