Open & Closed Systems Flashcards
Material transfer from surface to interior:
At convergent margins, the subduction of ocean floor.
Material transfer from interior to surface: (3)
At mid ocean ridges.
Some oceanic lithosphere goes into the continents.
Igneous activity at convergent margins (magma and volcanic gases).
An isolated system:
Allows neither matter or energy to cross it’s boundaries; realistically they don’t exist.
A closed system:
Allows energy, but not matter to cross it’s boundaries.
An open system:
Allows energy and matter to cross it’s boundaries.
Most of the cycles on Earth are open.
The rock cycle - An open system: (2)
Has processes involving the other main systems.
Exchange of matter, such as the formation of carbonate sediments from life processes.
The Earth - A closed system: (2)
Energy enters and leaves.
It has almost a constant mass.
Earth - closed system exceptions: (2)
Small amount of gas leaks from the atmosphere.
A few meteorites arrive to Earth.
