OPC’s Flashcards
OPC- one of the main features of German Naturalism was an obsession with science and medicine- reflected in ‘Woyzeck’. However, Buchner challenges this with the Doctor looking foolish and Woyzeck’s body ultimately being found with no blood
In my piece, I would connect to this through the theme of the human condition. Science and medicine also links to modern theatre and the status quo in regard to an ongoing debate on the divide between the rich and poor widening and how this affects healthcare.
OPC- 1913 production had a revolve enabling detailed sets to be used for each setting and a smooth transition between scenes
In using the main stage at the National Theatre, I will have access to the drum revolve stage but be using it in a more abstract style. E.g. When Woyzeck and Marie drown. As mydetailed sets are mostly on the sides of the stage.
OPC- Expressionist acting style may have used the appearance of over-acting, an ‘ecstatic’ style of acting. Been intense, violent, expressing tormented emotions and be a mixture of presentational and representational
I would keep this expressionist style of acting in my piece. Modern theatre has expanded to use a hybrid style which is similar in the sense that both styles are energetic on top of their use of innovative theatre, ‘Frantic Assembly’ being an example- they place an emphasis upon physical theatre which is a technique which I would implorewhere I see fit.
OPC-Atmosphere in Expressionism would be dreamlike and surreal (early stages of the period), nightmarish, eerie, appeal to the audience’s emotions and closely linked to the plays theme and message
My use of design elements will have a similar aim as in the OPC. E.g. the mood is aided by the shadowy woods and the presence of the Grandmother. I would use soundscapes and low, flashing lighting to assist the intensity of Woyzeck’s mind to the audience
