Generic Introduction Flashcards
- Opening
Woyzeck by Georg Buchner was written in 1836 and first performed in 1913 at the Residence Theatre in Munich. It is a political play about the struggles of a working class man and how he is abused both physically and mentally by people in power within society leading to a tragic yet inevitable ending.
- Buchner intentions
Buchner intended for the play to highlight the social inequalities and how this affects the lower class as they are dealt a life they don’t agree with, subsequently leading them to insanity and other means in some cases. Woyzeck has awareness of this as he repeatedly reminisces of how his life would be different if he were wealthy
- As a director..
As a director, i would use punchdrunk’s style and methodologies to create an immersive performance for the audience, which challenges the modern day issues, concerning social class and the human condition which are prevalent today.
- My concept
My production would be set in the Oliver Theatre at the National Theatre, which is central to my piece as it includes a revolve similar to the Residence Theatre in Munich. The time and location would be in a provincial German town post WW11 with the central character of Woyzeck being a solider who has returned from war, battling PTSD and manic episodes.
- Production style
The style of the production would remain episodic like the OPC’s and a strong use of expressionism within acting and the design elements.
- Punch drunk
Through Punchdrunk i would dramatícese this to focus on immersing the audience through their senses to make them feel physically present and part of a real experience. ‘We want to create work that leaves you spinning and seeing stars’- Felix Barrett, artistic director
My intention (ENDING)
My intention is for the audience to recognise how the piece applies to modern day Britain through its societal oppression supposedly driving people to madness
