What is a Direct Attack?
Fire along the Fires edge
What is an Indirect Attack?
Using natural or constructed fuel breaks to control fire well ahead of fire front
Backfiring VS. Burning out
- backfiring is indirect attack where you set a fire inside the control lines to change the force and direction of fire
- burning out is burning a dirty burn or fingers of an inactive fire line
Time frame and alarms for initial attack
Initial attack is considered a fire w/n first 2 hrs or 2nd alarm
What is considered an operational period?
From 0800-0800 the following day
When the fire starts to 0800 the following day
Information you want to cover in an On Scene report (brush)
- location
- Brush type/size of fire
- fire behavior
- Primary helispot (designate an exact engine)
Size up information for a brush fire
- SRA/LRA
- Direction of travel
- Potential for growth
- Life threats
- Property/Critical infrastructure threats
- Hazards
- Identify the Box
- Comm plan
- Commitment
- Ordering point
Progress Reports to Dispatch on brush fire
- Change in command
- Change in box
- Updated GPS information
- Emergency Traffic
- Change in Comm plan
- Escalation/De-escalation of incident
- Fire Contained
- Fire Controlled
- Fire Out
Considerations for ICP for fires that go 2nd alarm or more?
ICP needs to be big enough, with good access and good comms (Cell and radio)
IC must get what other tasks done w/n first alarm?
- Contacting assisting agencies
- Make sure agencies have a way of contacting incident
- Establish Unified Command
- Inform the public
